Maracas Bay from the north-coast lookout, Trinidad

Trinidad & Tobago

Two islands. One country. Nothing else quite like it.

The summit could have been held anywhere with a ballroom. It is held here because the place is part of the argument.

The southernmost Caribbean

Not A Resort. A Country.

Trinidad sits eleven kilometers off the coast of Venezuela, close enough that on a clear day you can see the mainland. It is one of the English-speaking Caribbean’s leading business and energy centers, and it does not run on tourism. That is unusual here, and it changes everything about how the place feels: nobody is performing the Caribbean at you, because there is a country to get on with.

Tobago, twenty minutes away by air, is the opposite and knows it. Reef, rainforest, and villages where the fishing boats still matter more than the hotels.

What was invented here

The steelpan was born here.

It was made in Trinidad, out of discarded oil drums, by communities whose drumming the colonial authorities had banned. Every note on that surface was hammered into shape by hand.

Calypso came from here. So did soca. For a country of 1.4 million people, the cultural export rate is difficult to explain and impossible to ignore.

The mix

Where Divali, Eid And Christmas Are All Public Holidays

Trinidad is roughly a third Indo-Trinidadian, roughly a third Afro-Trinidadian, and roughly a quarter mixed, with Chinese, Syrian, Lebanese, Portuguese and Venezuelan communities layered through it.

That is not a diversity statistic. It is why the food is the best argument for coming: doubles from a street cart at seven in the morning, roti, bake and shark at Maracas, callaloo, pelau. Four culinary traditions that have been arguing productively for the better part of two centuries.

What you will actually see

Under An Hour From The Conference Room

The north coast, the rainforest and the Caroni Swamp are under an hour from the hotel. Tobago’s reefs are a twenty-minute flight.

Come early, stay after

The summit ends on a Saturday. Deliberately.

Certification week runs Monday to Thursday, the summit opens Thursday evening and runs Friday and Saturday, and Sunday is yours. It is built for a long weekend.

Tobago is a twenty-minute flight or a ferry ride. Maracas is forty minutes over the mountains. The Caroni Swamp, where the scarlet ibis come in to roost at dusk in their thousands, is half an hour the other way.

“Break a vase, and the love that reassembles the fragments is stronger than that love which took its symmetry for granted when it was whole.”

Derek Walcott · Nobel lecture, 1992 · founder of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, Port of Spain
